Introduction to DALF
The DALF (Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française) is the highest official French language diploma issued by the French Ministry of National Education. It certifies advanced mastery of the French language and is recognised internationally for academic, professional, and personal purposes.
Unlike DELF exam levels (A1‑B2), which are aimed at beginners through independent users, the DALF is intended for advanced and proficient users of French — learners who can communicate fluently and accurately in demanding contexts.
The DALF diploma is valid for life and functions as an official credential proving high competence in French, which can strengthen university applications, enhance career opportunities, and support international mobility.
Who Should Take DALF?
DALF is intended for :
University Students : Particularly those planning to study in French universities at the undergraduate, graduate, or doctoral level.
Professionals : Individuals working in international organizations, diplomacy, or careers requiring high-level French.
Advanced Learners : Those who have achieved a B2+ level and wish to certify their proficiency formally.
Lifelong Learners : Anyone passionate about mastering the French language for personal, social, or professional purposes.
Candidates are expected to be independent users of the language, capable of interpreting complex texts, expressing opinions clearly, and engaging in sophisticated discourse. Unlike DELF, DALF assumes learners can think critically and argue coherently in French.
DALF Levels : C1 and C2
The DALF diploma is divided into two levels :
DALF C1 – Advanced Level
Purpose : To demonstrate the ability to communicate fluently and accurately in complex situations.
Competencies :
Comprehend detailed and lengthy texts, including implicit meanings.
Produce structured and coherent written and spoken content.
Use French flexibly for social, academic, and professional purposes.
Example Task : Writing an essay synthesizing two or more complex documents on a social or scientific topic.
DALF C2 – Mastery Level
Purpose : To certify near-native mastery of French, including abstract reasoning, complex argumentation, and precise expression.
Competencies :
Understand virtually all spoken and written French, including subtle nuances.
Summarize and reformulate complex information from multiple sources.
Present arguments and opinions clearly, concisely, and persuasively.
Example Task : Deliver a presentation summarizing several research articles, followed by a discussion with the examiner.
